The downside of a permanent contract of employment

If we are to believe the research reported on in the following article - Temps are happier and healthier than permanent staff (Dan Thomas, Personnel Today), then it could be argued that there is an increasing problem with employment of a "permanent" nature.

In the article it is suggested that permanent jobs (compared to temporary jobs) are more stressful, results in more depression, increase the chances of sickness and absence, and, are noted by less freedom over the job in hand and levels of job satisfaction.

Having said that, the leader of the research - Professor David Guest - is quoted as saying: "...it is not so much that temporary jobs are good but that permanent jobs have got worse...". Downshifting here I come!
