For those of you who interested in observing the world of work, then a new programme on this matter starts Friday on BBC3 at 9 p.m. It's called the "The Secret World of the Shop" and is the account of 12 months of a retail outlet in Middlesbrough. Looks interesting and hopefully it's a real life version of the "The Office" in the making. Time to get a digi-box if you've not got one already!

There is bad news again for the unions. Hardly a mention in the election campaign and then there's a drop in overall members by about 36,000 (or 0.5 per cent). Despite this drop it should not be noted that the number of women in unions rose by 42,000. For more details see below.

Here's an article for those who think that workers in Britain have gone a bit soft. In this article the Institute of Directors is calling for the UK to maintain it's 'opt-out' of the EU Working Time Directive (restricts workers to an average of less than 48 hours per week over a period of time). Apparently the directive does not accommodate the needs of business. If you are regularly working more than 40 hours per week I suspect you are more than accommodating the needs of your employer.

In Wales there is story about nurses and how they are stressed by heavy workloads. At least they have a union on their side unlike around 65 per cent of the population.

Finally, an interesting article about HR or personnel practitioners and their strategy in relation to city workers who allegedly drink more than is supposedly good for them. There is also mention of regular cocaine use. Interesting is how HR are staying out of this problem and demonstrating how a profession with a history of dealing with the welfare of employees is gradually shifting to a hard business approach.
