According to an article in The Sunday Times yesterday, All work and no play leads to divorce (Roger Dobson and Ed Habershon). In brief, traditional reasons for divorce such as violence and infidelity are down at a time when overwork cited as a reason for divorce has more than trebled.
A further part of the findings also suggest:
"Among couples who have divorced recently, the motives given by women have changed dramatically. In addition to excessive working hours, mentioned by 28 per cent of women, 30 per cent complained about household chores — perhaps because of husbands’ increased absence from home. "
Having said that, the research which the article is based on draws attention to the fact that the threshold for divorce has come down over the past few decades. What is more, it doesn't take into account that many people do not marry, or marry later than they would do otherwise, because of their commitment to work.
