Differences between male and female managers

The idea to post about differences between male and female managers comes courtesy of an article called Workaholic managers sacrifice 19m days of holiday each year (John Carvel, The Guardian).

As the title suggests, managers collectively miss out on, "19m days of holiday each year because they are scared of missing deadlines and find it hard to let go of their responsibilities". This is said to be the equivalent of "donating" 4.1 days of holidays back to the employer and represents savings to the tune of about £3.5bn per year.

One aspects of the article, however, made a point of highlighting differences between male and female managers on the matter of holidays. They include:

1) 56 per cent of women managers would never willingly contact their organisation during a holiday, compared with 36 per cent of the men

2) 87 per cent of women managers would never contact team members who are on holiday, compared with 69 per cent of the men

3) More than a third of the women carried holiday over into the next year, compared with 27 per cent of the men

What male and female do on holidays varies as well, such as:

1) 27 per cent of women visit the doctor or dentist, compared with 16 per cent of men

2) 31 per cent of women use it to catch up on sleep, compared with 16 per cent of men

3) 68 per cent of women catch up with domestic chores, compared with 14 per cent of men

Whilst this is only a survey it strongly suggests men and women have different priorities. Moreover, it would certainly be of use to know if there are comparable studies out there from 10, 20, 30 years ago, etc. In other words, for example, is there convergence occurring between the two genders, are women better than men at resisting corporate pressures, is the increasing presence of female managers having an effect on the habits of male managers, etc.
