E-learning and Web 2.0

The CIPD has just announced a new podcast on the topic of e-learning and web 2.0 communication technology.

The podcast is entitled: Learning and development in a socially networked age.

A brief outline:

John McGurk assess how e-learning is increasing in the workplace but wonders about how effectively it is used and evaluated in companies.

He is a convert to the Twitter method of sharing of information.

Later he adds to the discussion on the age divide in the use of social media.

HRM magazine available as podcast

It would appear that the CIPD's People Management magazine - published every two weeks - is now available as a podcast.

Some details of the latest edition:

Highlights include an interview with Matthew Brearley, HR director of Vodafone UK; part two of our series on the future of pensions, focusing on the public sector; a legal guide to maternity rights and redundancy; and a 'how to' on HR intranets.

I have one criticism - it's just one big MP3 file and it's far from easy to skip from article to article.

Work life balance and ethical behaviour

Deloitte and Touche has just released a podcast that looks at the “Critical Balance between Work Life and Ethical Behavior.”

A summary of the podcast:

"The behavior of leaders is the most critical element in establishing an ethical workplace culture.

What must leaders consider each day and how do leaders think about ethics in the work force?

What behavioral influences do employees look to for ethical guidance?

What work-life strategies promote an ethical environment that attracts and retains the top-level talent necessary to grow and sustain America’s corporations?"

The podcast also seems to coincide with some survey results that tries to make a connection between work life balance and ethical behaviour - see press release.

Management-issues starts podcasting

When I say Management-issues has started podcasting what I really mean is I've just got to hear about it!

So far there have been four podcasts produced.

The podcasts go under the heading of The Working Week.

The Working Week is said to be "a weekly digest of news, blogs, and opinion from the pages of www.management-issues.com.

Each week, host Wayne Turmel leads a spirited discussion on matters important to business, management development and human resources and the things that have caught his - and his guests' - eyes."

Subjects covered so far include of leadership, developing employee potential, global executives, and employee engagement.

Time to invest in an MP3 player, if you haven't already.

CIPD starts podcasting

The CIPD has recently started podcasting about a range of HRM-related subjects.

The subjects they have created podcasts about include managing change and leadership.

A further podcast is due in February that looks at talent management.

I listened to them on the way home and found them quite useful and insightful.

Aspiring HR/personnel professionals should certainly consider downloading them.

Training by podcast

An article appeared in The Scotsman the other day that looks at the potential use of podcasts in employee training.

In Podcasts take staff training out of office Graham Bucknall (a director at Scotsys) suggests, "this simple but flexible technology presents significant opportunities to improve internal communication and professional development."

For example, "giving employees the flexibility to receive and consume information in a format that suits modern working practices, businesses can begin to tackle some of their most pressing challenges."

He goes on to say how podcasting can "augment" more traditional, written training material.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see if podcasts can make a difference to the training of employees.

Podcasts to give graduate applicants "deeper insight into life the company"

I can't believe it's nearly a year since it was announced that Cadbury-Schweppes would be using blogs as part of recruiting graduate workers.

In last week or so Cadbury-Schweppes have announced an extension of the blogging part of their recruitment strategy - downloadable MP3 files to "allow potential graduates an even deeper insight into life at the company."

The rationale for using blogs and podcasts is as follows:

Today top graduates have a higher expectation of being able to use the internet as a primary source of information and communication. Cadbury Schweppes has therefore created a pioneering, easy to use site that provides all the tools graduates need to get an insight into the company and the graduate recruitment process.
